Important Information
The ÷8 Rule

The Nether is 8× smaller. To align portals, divide X and Z from the Overworld by 8 to get Nether coordinates.

Y Axis

Y is not converted. Place portals between Y 64-100 in the Nether to avoid bedrock (Y 127) and lava (Y below 32).

Detection Radius

The game searches for existing portals within a 128-block radius in the Overworld or 16-block radius in the Nether before generating a new one.

End Does Not Convert

The End dimension uses its own scale and does not follow the ÷8 rule used between Overworld and Nether.

Fast Travel

Traveling 1 block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld — use this to travel large distances quickly.

Linked Portals

To guarantee a link between two portals, build the second one inside the detection radius of the converted coordinate.

How to Use the Coordinate Converter

Enter your X, Y, and Z coordinates in the Overworld and the tool automatically calculates the equivalent position in the Nether — and vice versa. The rule used by the game is always the same: divide X and Z by 8 when going from Overworld to Nether, and multiply by 8 when going from Nether to Overworld. The Y axis does not change.

The "Destination Portal" section shows the exact position where a Nether portal will generate for your current coordinate, as well as a /tp command ready to copy and paste into the game chat.

Why don't portals always match up exactly?

Minecraft searches for an existing portal before generating a new one: a radius of 128 blocks in the Overworld, or 16 blocks in the Nether. If it doesn't find one within that radius, it creates a new portal at the converted coordinate — which is why small variations of a few blocks are normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you convert Overworld coordinates to Nether coordinates?

Divide X and Z from Overworld by 8. Y does not change between dimensions.

Does the Y axis change when traveling to the Nether?

No. Y is the same in both dimensions, but the Nether has a bedrock ceiling at Y 127 in older versions.

Why doesn't my coordinate match the existing portal exactly?

The game looks for an existing portal within a 128-block radius in the Overworld or 16-block radius in the Nether before creating a new one.
