Crop Growth Calculator

Choose the crop, adjust light, water, neighbors, and biome, and see real growth times in Minecraft — in ticks, seconds, and hourly yield, with or without bone meal.

Crop
Growth Conditions
15

Minimum: 9 to grow. 15 = full sun or torch.

Water up to 4 blocks away hydrates farmland.

Illustrative effect — in actual gameplay, biomes do not affect speed.

Adjacent crops of the same type increase speed.

To calculate farm total yield.

Growth Formulas
Growth chance per random tick:
p = 1 / (floor(25/growthSpeed) + 1)
Base growthSpeed:
= light_above/10 × 1/3 + 1 (no neighbors)
+= 0.25 × same_row_neighbors
+= 0.75 × hydrated
Ticks to grow one stage (average):
= floor(25/growthSpeed) + 1, converted to seconds ÷ 20 (ticks/s)
Bone meal:
advances 2 to 5 stages randomly per use (average 3.5)

Simplified formula for educational purposes — does not reproduce byte-for-byte the actual internal game algorithm (which uses a 3×3 neighbor grid and additional rules).

How to Use the Crop Growth Calculator

Choose the crop and adjust conditions: light level (minimum 9 to grow for most crops), whether there is adjacent water hydrating the farmland, how many neighboring crops of the same type are in the same row, and the amount of plants in your farm. The "Results" section shows growth time and hourly yield.

Use the "Bone Meal" panel to calculate how many bone meals are needed to harvest faster, and the "Crop Table" as a quick reference for stages, minimum light, and drops for each crop in the game.

Why isn't my farm growing?

The most common causes are: insufficient light (below 9), lack of water within 4 blocks of the farmland, or the crop simply does not require farmland (sugar cane, cactus, and Nether wart grow differently without hydration).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum light level for crops to grow in Minecraft?

Most crops require a light level of 9 or higher (from blocks or sky) to grow, including wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, melons, pumpkins, and bamboo.

Do neighboring crops actually speed up growth?

Yes. Having other crops of the same type adjacent in the same row increases growth speed, encouraging organized row farming.

Does bone meal work on any crop?

No. Sugar cane, cactus, and Nether wart do not respond to bone meal — only crops that grow in stages on farmland, such as wheat, carrots, and potatoes.
